Established in 1999 initially as a committee aimed at addressing the gender-related needs within the University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD) community, the UP Diliman Gender Office (UPDGO) underwent significant development over the years, evolving into a dedicated office in 2001. This transformation marked a pivotal milestone in the university’s commitment to promoting gender equality and addressing gender-based issues on campus.
By 2003, the UPDGO was integrated as one of the units directly under the Office of the Chancellor, signifying its institutional importance and recognition within the university’s administrative structure. This organizational positioning enabled the UPDGO to collaborate more closely with key decision-makers and stakeholders, thereby enhancing its capacity to influence policies and initiatives related to gender equity and inclusion.
Over time, the UPDGO has continually evolved in response to the changing landscape of gender dynamics and societal needs. This evolution has been characterized by an expansion in the nature, scope, and complexity of its gender-related work, reflecting a deepening commitment to advancing gender justice and empowerment within the UPD community.
One of the primary functions of the UPDGO is to facilitate gender mainstreaming, which involves integrating a gender perspective into all aspects of university policies, programs, and activities. This is achieved through various means, including training sessions, research projects, and publication efforts aimed at raising awareness and promoting understanding of gender issues among university stakeholders.
